DSL - Technical Questions |
Choose from an option below:
Why is distance important with DSL?
The length of your phone line between your location (home or office) and the central office, is a very important factor in whether or not you qualify for DSL, and what speed you can get. DSL is distance-sensitive: the farther you are from the central office the more the DSL signal degrades, and the slower your connection may be.

Do I need an additional telephone lines in order to use DSL?
No. DSL can be installed on an existing telephone line, and with the use of a line filter (included in the installation kit), it will not interfere with regular phone calls.

What kind of equipment do I need for DSL, and is it included?
The DSL line will require a DSL modem. The DSL modem will connect to your computer through an ethernet cable. Both the modem and the ethernet cable are included in the "Do-It-Yourself" kit. However, you will need to have an ethernet card in your computer.

Are the DSL routers internal or external devices?
The DSL modems are external. They are separate boxes that connect to your computer with an ethernet line.

What is the difference between sDSL and aDSL?
sDSL stands for Synchronous DSL, which simply means the download and upload speeds are synchronous (or in other words, equal). ADSL stands for Asynchronous DSL, this basically means that the download speed can be much higher than the upload speed. aDSL is the most common type of DSL, since faster downloads are usually the reason for getting a broadband connection.

What can I expect for download and upload speeds?
This depends on the DSL service that you get. The standard DSL account through Xecunet is an ADSL account with 1.5 Mbs (megabits per second) download speed which is approximately 25 times faster than a 56 Kbs (kilobits per second) dial up connection, and a 128 Kbs upload speed.

What is the difference between DSL and Cable Modem?
Xecunet DSL provides high-speed internet access directly to you over your telephone line, whereas cable modem offers high-speed internet access over a cable television line which means the bandwidth would be shared with everyone in the local loop. This then means that cable-modem access may slow down if there are too many people using it.

How do I configure my Xecunet DSL Modem with an external router?
Assuming you are using a Westell modem/router, you perform the following steps:
1) Go to Maintenance -> Backup / Restore. 2) Hit the third restore button to reset the modem to factory defaults. 3) You will now be taken back to the Setup Wizard. Enter a name for the connection, leave the Username and Password fields empty, leave the VPI and VCI settings at their default, and finally choose "bridge" as the protocol. 4) Connect your router to the ethernet port of the Westell, and proceed with the configuration of your external router according to the instructions provided by its manufacturer. Remember to configure your external router for PPPoE with your DSL username and password.

I've installed all the filters and plugged in the DSL modem but I'm not getting any internet connection. The "Ready" light is blinking
The "Ready" light is your DSL signal. It may be due to a bad filter. What you'll want to do is unplug every phone in your home so nothing but the DSL is plugged it. If you get a solid Ready light, then plug on phone in at a time, testing the internet connection after each. When you find filter that's causing the problem remove it and give us a call. We'll replace faulty filters free of charge.

I've removed all the phone devices from their respective phone jacks and only have my DSL is connected but the Ready light is still blinking.
This is most likely a provisioning issue. You will need to call us so we can open a trouble ticket on the line to get the issue resolved.

I've got everything plugged in but the ethernet light is off. What's wrong?
There is a problem between the Westell modem and the ethernet card in your computer or hub. If it's on a hub, try moving it to a different port. If it's on a computer, try replacing the ethernet cable. This may be a hardware issue with your network card. If you've ruled out everything, place contact us and we'll replace the modem.
