Messenger Spam |
Recently spammers (those
who send unwanted junkmail) have been abusing a
service that is built into Windows NT, Windows 2000
and Windows XP to advertise their wares. This
service is called Windows Messenger Service. You
may have seen a gray text window open up in the middle
of your screen with an "OK" button at the
bottom advertising some sort of product or
website. These windows do not and cannot contain
any pictures, and are text only. Here is an
example of a Windows Messenger spam

The only way to avoid this type of spam is to disable the
Windows Messenger service itself. This is a service that is activated by
default within Windows NT, 2000, and XP. Disabling the messenger service will not disable other instant messaging
programs such as AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and so forth. The instructions to do so in each
operating system are below: Windows NT - Double Click on the My Computer Icon,
and then double click on the Control Panel Icon.
Double click on the listing for Services, and then
double click on Messenger. Select
"Stop", and then select "Disable"
in the Startup Type Section. Click
"OK". Windows 2000 - Double Click on the
My Computer Icon, and then double click on the Control
Panel Icon. Double click on Administrative
Tools, double click on the listing for Services, and
then double click on Messenger. Select
"Stop", and then select "Disable"
in the Startup Type Section. Click
"OK". Windows XP Home - Click on the Start
Menu, and then click on Control Panel. Click
on Administrative Tools and then click on
Component Services. Double click on the listing
for Services Local and then double click on
Messenger. Select "Stop", and then
select "Disable" in the Startup Type
Section. Click "OK". Windows XP Pro
- Click on the Start Menu, and then click on Control
Panel. Click on the listing for Performance and
Maintenance, and then click on Administrative
Tools. Double click on the listing for Services
and then double click on Messenger. Select
"Stop", and then select "Disable"
in the Startup Type Section. Click
"OK". If you have any other questions or concerns about
